Pathology infographic: Age-related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness for people over 60 year old in the world. The purpose of this infographic was to educate and bring awareness about this disease with the hopes that the people affected can take the necessary steps to prevent further vision deterioration.

Challenge

There has been a lot of research done on AMD as it is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world. A lot could be said about this disease so one of my main challenges was to think about what narrative I wanted to tell taking into consideration the main audience.

Solution

Since AMD is preventable, I wanted the story to revolve around bringing awareness to the disease by showing tissue deterioration at 3 different stages. For each stage, I would show the effects of the disease on vision.

I created multiple thumbnails to experiment with layouts. I wanted to prioritize reading order as the infographic contained many different elements so I opted for a standard left-to-right reading for the entire spread.

First draft

I sketched out the illustrative elements of the infographic to have them as well as the text approved by a pathologist. Thankfully, only minor edits were needed and I got the green light to start on the final rendering.
